...new nas song off the "nigger" album...

CLICK THE PICTURE TO HEAR THE SONG

ummm... i guess i should preface this by saying that i'm not the nas fan people probably think i am. actually, me and do dat go back and forth about this all the time. why? i think i'm more a fan of style than content. don't get me wrong, i think content is much more important, but as far as me enjoying an emcee, i have to be able to feel what you're saying! nas' flow is just too machine-gun for me. i would much rather listen to the jigga man. same with talib and mos. talib's verses are genius on paper, but he just doesn't deliver the message well. mos might not be as poetic or profound in content as talib, but he makes you want to absorb the message. am i making sense?

anyway, i say all that to say this: the song's beat is ill. nas flows on it great (better than the stuff i'm used to from him). BUT... what the fuck is up with the content on this one?

...not mad 'cause eminem said nigga, 'cause he my nigga...

nah, homie. what nas just did right there is allow every little white boy who worships eminem (and nas for that matter) to get a "nigga" pass. believe that! i understand the use of the word within our communities, amongst people of color -- and specifically african people in america, but i don't see how it's cool to just let the king of white boys get away with the use of such a word! i never thought i'd hear nas go that route. a white boy come say that shit around me, i'm checking him!

would nas let eminem get away with it if he hadn't blown up and become one of the largest hip hop artists of our time? if eminem was marshal with a demo tape, and he called a black woman a bitch or a "nigga" (which he did) would nas still be cool with it? money makes a muthuhfuckuh switch so quick...

there's all kind of shit on this song that's questionable for me. i guess the line in the hook where he says, "...they like to strangle niggas, blame a nigga, shootin' niggas, hangin' niggas, still you want to be a nigga too..?" tries to drive in the negatives of trying to embrace the "nigga" in you, but, the majority of the song is about him opening the "nigga" floodgates for kikes, spicks, chinks and all!

...some say naacp keep us side-tracked, but i don't buy that, i buy aston martins, faster cars than nascars...

holler at me with your thoughts.

Hey...you might want to check out Randall Kennedy's book "Nigger: the strange career of a troublesome word". He has a chapter in it where he talks about white people using the word in different contexts and what he feels is acceptable/unacceptable as a black man. check it:

Yeah, like almost any mainstream hip hop content, this song is sending some serious mixed messages.

Would NAS be saying that about Eminem if he hadn't made it big? Can't say on that note, but I can say that I'm a white boy who spends some time on the streets and got friends there, and I get called it. I'm not trying to claim it and definitely don't call other people that. But it's such a mentality- for some white people, who get seen as cops if they leave the hood they are known in, saying nigga to someone is kinda saying "i'm from another hood".

It's always been about affection towards me, and so I won't knock that, but I'll knock some people for it in general, because they know it's not helping anybody and aside from me, it's only the oldheads saying that, so might as well put another voice behind it.

Controversial, I know...

not a good line..buuut..i don't think nas or any single black figure is credentialed enough to give every white cat a pass to say the word. there will always be black folks out there willing to check fools who think they have the right to say it when they don't.
