...fador is an animal...
went to the affliction fight in orange county yesterday with the homies. hella fun! we got there early to catch the pre-fights and catch up.
the pre-fights were cool, but everything after the pay-per-view intro (k-1 tournament style) got serious. starting with the intro music for bobby green (who lost), who used t.i's "what's happening" song... hella hype! good fights throughout the night, but the one of the two highlights came from the homie, paul buentello who just landed hard punch after hard punch on "baby fador." congrats paul! the second highlight came from the mid-air knockout of andrei arlovsky from the night's star, fador! eesh...

the squad (l-r): paul bradley, mark "shark" miller, rakaa, me and phil davis -- click on the picture to find out more about phil and paul (missing - jay tan)

(l-r) rakaa, jay tan, paul and phil

(l-r) mark, rakaa and me
big shout out to my homeboy, mark for hooking up the tickets!!! this muthuhfukkuh knows everybody! i'll be writing a lot more about this dude... he'll be fighting again soon so wish my man luck!

...imagine...
i posted this awhile back, but i thought i'd do it again. this is from my former partner in rhyme, kiwi... classic joint!
...gran torino was wack...
...i'm tired of hearing about how great this movie is! fuck this movie.
i took krish and kahlil to a little ilongo restaurant yesterday, and the bootleg dvd dude rolled up in the spot. he offered me 5 top quality movies for $10... no camera shit! gran torino was one of the films.
the movie started out okay... classic tough-guy clint at his wife's funeral, eyeballing his disrespectful little grandkids (obviously, setting us up for a hard-nosed old man who is easily annoyed with the ways of "these kids today"). no problem, i'm with it. then we meet the hmong characters of the film... c'mon. they couldn't find ANY hmong actors who could work across from clint eastwood? first off, the script/dialogue itself was garbage! who talks like this. then the delivery of these lines was making me cringe. poorly acted film on everyone else's part but clint's. i really believed him to be a racial-slur-throwing korean war vet... hmmm... just a very poorly acted movie.

also, can someone explain why ain't nobody talking about the very WRONG way the people of color were portrayed in this film?! the lowriding cholo's, complete with four-finger bandana, the disrespectful woman-groping black men who just stand on the corner in basketball gear, and the super submissive asian folks who just allow this old man to walk up in the crib calling them "slopes" and "gooks." sorry, maybe i've just never met any of these people! every hmong person i've ever met would fuck you up if you walked up in the crib talking that shit!
the dopest shit in the movie is the car, and we only get one really good moment with that. this movie gets a big thumbs-down in my book. get the bootleg if you really want to see it! oh, and that's not the homie nam in the movie -- haha!

update:
someone just directed me to geo's review of the film -- check it out if you want a much smarter analysis of the film. though i don't completely agree with my brother, i totally understand the breakdown! geo's fuckin' smart!!!

...albums to revisit...
during this whole barack-phenom on television, i decided to work out to old ice cube joints... from "bitch iz a bitch" with nwa to the entire "lethal injection" album. i really do consider the majority of his work a soundtrack to my childhood. i miss popping in my cube tape and walking across los angeles -- feeling hard as fuck with my "death certificate" shit blowing my ear drums out!
"FUCK YOU ICE CUBE!"

...show and prove...

when i was in junior high school, my homeboys and i would ignore our american history teacher's lectures and flip through our history book looking for funny pictures... then we would look over at each other and hand signal the page number and laugh our asses off. i guess what i'm getting at is, wasn't shit in those books that i related to. nothing in the lectures that made me feel an attachment to american history. the very short chapter on civil rights only spoke of speeches, peaceful protests, rosa parks and maybe a short paragraph on harriet tubman. the rest of that book, to me, was old white guys in powdered wigs and old white guys in finely pressed suit and tie jumpoffs. how will my son, kahlil's american history book look? will barack obama get an entire chapter or a short paragraph? have the books changed much since my day? the word "historic" is being thrown around by my peers and i wonder what will be swept away under obama's superstardom... oscar grant. sean bell. jena 6. katrina. are these "historic" events strong enough to get a blurb in a book? did these events, these tragedies earn a spot in a book that is aimed to teach our children of what has lead us to our now? will kahlil relate?
i think if one teacher had taught the youth in my community of their history, things would truly be different. i think if we were given information on the root of our self-hatred, many of us might better recognize it and be able to check it before it became a fight... before it became a murder. okay, i'm ranting. enough. y'all get what i'm saying.
it's time to be critical, kasamas.

did y'all enjoy the song "crooks and rooks?" well, straight from the lab of it's producer, nick james, comes the nas remixes project! download the joint and let me know what you think... oh, and be on the lookout for a project with nick james x ise lyfe x myself...

click the picture to download

Oakland producer Nick James has remixed Nas songs from Illmatic, I Am, The Lost Tapes, God's Son, Streets Disciple, and more. Songs like "Ether," "The World is Yours," "Purple," "Black Zombie," "N.Y. State of Mind Pt. 2," "Get Down," "You Know My Style," and many more were all given a new feel and new life. What initially started as a free viral mixtape of old Nas remixes, James ended up making 14 new remixes. In the same vien of his past remix projects, Nick James continues to provide hard beats partnered with melodic soundscapes that speak to diverse audiences in Hip-Hop and across genres of music.

...more videos...
i'm looking at doing another video, but i'm not sure which one to do next... here are my options:
"swing" - i think if i shot this one, i would shoot primarily at the fruitvale bart station with some of the bay homies. traditional "rap" video style...
"no fuss" - this one would have a light storyline to it. me walking to work out and running into silly everyday shit that might normally get somebody in a fight (ie. scuffing shoes)...
"quit" - this one would look like a webcam. simple. shit talk. nothing crazy.
hmmm... what to do, what to do... in the meantime, here's another oldie... but goodie!

here's a joint we leaked silently... it was shot by the homie, gabe of mar vista films and cut by the director of the "crooks and rooks" video, patricio ginelsa. there are some really good cameos from some of my students in this (and jana)... i hope you like it -- leave a comment!
this is a very dear song to me and i appreciate all the work put into it...

my homeboy, tad nakamura put this film together a few years back, and i was fortunate enough to get an early copy... i've always praised him for this work, and now it's gone public!!! the film is called, "yellow brotherhood," and it's about... well, let me not spoil it -- just watch it!!!
Yellow Brotherhood from Tadashi Nakamura on Vimeo.
right now, tad is putting the finishing touches on his newest film, "a song for ourselves." its a documentary about japanese-american artist, chris ijima. if you're smart (and in the southern california area), you'll reserve february 28th to come out to the premiere in little tokyo, los angeles. oh, and if my man's work isn't motivation enough, the premiere of the film will be sandwiched by an exclusive bambu/kiwi (native guns) and blue scholars show!!! i'll have more information closer to the date.
still not convinced? okay, here's a song from the upcoming film's accompanying mixtape, mixed by my kung pao chicken brethren dj phatrick: "when will the time come"

...soul assassins...
here's something i did a few days back... big up my homeboy, mils for chopping this up right -- wait for the exclusive freestyle at the end of my blabbing.
...*sigh...
alright y'all... i gave the other blog "look" a shot, and i didn't like it. i was having a hard time trying to work the comment and archive section on my g.e.d. education... so, i'm back to the classic format -- which i'm really cool with. so, in case you missed any of the blogs in between my little attempt to be adrizzle with my web game, here's the link to the few posts you may have missed: the bambu blog
thanks for hanging in there while i figured this thing out. for now, this will have to do!
